A Taste of Venice in Botswana

Walking home on the dirt road shortcut from the hospital today and all of a sudden I came upon a huge ditch spanning the whole path. Did I turn around and go back? That would be far too logical.

Instead, I looked at a kid on the other side of the ditch."Should I jump?" I asked. "Yes!" he responded. Jumping across a ditch in Botswana with water on the other side while wearing my work clothes and carrying a backpack/biopsy bag on the advice of an 8 year old? What could possibly go wrong?

Remarkably, I made it across without so much as a trip. Unfortunately, however, my feet sunk a foot down into mud. And once I looked up, I kind of wished I hadn't taken the leap (pun intended). The whole path was covered in water (the ditch must have been to stop the flood from going any further?) So I basically waded through mud to get home. So much for my one nice pair of shoes :)

But I'm not complaining....I love a little excitement in my commute.
